I have taught guitar in Sussex for over 15 years, both privately and in schools. I help students with auditions, performances, music exams and just getting better at playing.

Whether you want to learn classical guitar, electric guitar or acoustic guitar, I have the knowledge and experience to ensure you can progress quickly.

If you are interested in bass guitar or ukulele, I can also show you how to play. I provide tuition for music theory and often contribute practical help and guidance for composing and song-writing. I even have experience on lute and baroque guitar, if you have an interest in early music.

For those interested in singing while playing guitar or ukulele, I can share my own singing and accompanying experience and help you find your voice.

Lessons for children, teenagers and adults

My wide experience teaching children and teenagers ensures that students will enjoy learning their instrument while making real progress.

Past and present students have worked on music A-level, GCSE and IB performances and coursework, practiced for concerts and gigs, prepared for auditions and for music grade exams. See examples of grade certificates from successful students. I have worked as a music examiner for RSL (Rockschool) and IBO, and helped ABRSM with music syllabus development, so I have a very good understanding of music qualifications. Read more about different types of music grade exams

I have enhanced DBS certification for working with children and vulnerable adults, and Public Liability Insurance.

I also teach adults, from complete beginners to other guitar teachers who want to widen their knowledge.

If you have experience and want to build on existing skills, or are a complete beginner, I can offer patient and inspiring guidance.

Often, adult students are returning to the guitar after years without playing - these students are often surprised at how much comes back quickly, ensuring faster progress.

Also for adult classical guitarists, I run a regular guitar group. This is great for sight-reading, learning new repertoire and musicianship. It's also good fun and it's a friendly and relaxed group.

Location, fees and times

I teach from home near Palmeira Square in Hove.

Lessons take place in the afternoon/early evening during the week and on Saturday afternoons and I can sometimes find other times.

There are many bus routes to Palmeira Square. Hove railway station is about 15 minutes walk away. There is metered parking available close by.

Current lesson rates from Sept 2018:

£35 an hour
£27 for 3/4 hour
£18 for 1/2 hour

I usually suggest that beginners and children up to about age 13 have half-hour lessons. Older teenagers, adults and more experienced players usually prefer an hour or 3/4 of an hour.
